Volunteer Information
The Dunn Loring Swim & Dive program could not operate without the effort of countless volunteers. Each swim team family plays a critical role in helping to make our program run – from assisting with event set-up/clean-up, providing supplies, to filling one of the many roles at a swim meet. In addition, there are many jobs that can be done from home, outside of practice and meet hours that can help the team.
As such, we ask that each family volunteer 15 hours over the course of the swim team season. Families can sign up to volunteer on SwimTopia for each of the events on our calendar. In addition, there are a number of season-long volunteer coordinator roles as well as one-off volunteer opportunities. A description of each of these roles and jobs can be found under the VOLUNTEER tab. Please reach out to any of the team reps with questions about what you may be interested in helping with!
Communications
- Weekly emails: Once a week, usually Sunday, our Head Coach, will send out an email of what to watch out for over the next week. On Friday, information about the Saturday NVSL meet will be sent to families with swimmers selected to participate in the meet; there will also be a team-wide email with general meet information for anyone that wants to come and cheer on the Dolphins. We will also send emails throughout the week with updates, reminders and weather-related cancelations. Emails are sent to the email address that each family provided when registering. If you want to include additional family members to receive these updates, please log in and update your profile in SwimTopia.
- Facebook: The Dunn Loring Swim and Dive team Facebook page is a forum for families to post and ask questions related to swim team, share photos from events, etc. The Facebook page is private and requires anyone requesting membership to answer questions related to their affiliation with Dunn Loring Swim and Dive Team.
Health & Safety Considerations
- Sick Policy – Consistent with the pool policy, swimmers who are sick should not come to the pool for swim practice, meets or other events and should not return until they have thoroughly recovered to reduce the risk of spreading illnesses at the pool.
- Allergies, Special Medical Considerations & Food – Please make sure that the medical portion of your swimmer’s profile is updated in SwimTopia. Throughout the season we have a lot of fun activities and evening pep-rallies that include food items such as popsicles, ice cream and pot-luck dinner events. We ask that parents be responsible for managing food allergies of their swimmers at these events. In general, we do not have food items at swim practices with the exception of Donut Fridays and occasional special practices where the coaches may hand out candy. For these events, the donuts and candy are passed out at the end of practice and there will be an alternate treat that is free of the top common allergens.
- Concussion Awareness - The Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL) has developed requirements for member teams to have a concussion policy with coach education and certification included. NVSL established its policy in 2021 and is following the CDC’s Heads Up Concussion training and certification for coaches. Parents are requested to view the Concussion fact sheet located here.
- Weather-related closures – Any weather related closures that impact a swim and/or dive team event will be announced as quickly as possible via the SwimTopia app as well as posted on the Dunn Loring Swim & Dive Team Facebook page.
